Swimming Plus - Open water swimming events in Jeffreys Bay
Challenge Yourself This Winter

Now in its forth year, the Cold Water Classic is truly an extreme event that forms part of the JBay Winterfest being held from 6 - 17 July 2016 in Jeffreys Bay. Held on the 16 July 2016, swimmers can test themselves by swimming a mile, double mile or triple mile in ±12°C water.

About Swimming Plus

Hosting professional, safe and fun open water swimming events is our primary objective. However, our outlook is to broaden our offering by developing and holding events like trail running, x-terra, aquathlons and events of this nature that can incorporate swimming; are adventurous; and can be administered effectively by our systems and infrastructure.

Swimming Plus manages more than 15 swimming events per season, which begins in May and ends in April the following year. The height of the season is over the summer months, October to March. Our main approach is to grow these events and put on additional and diverse events over the quieter winter months.

Growing open water swimming

Our aim is to get more pool swimmers to try and experience open water swimming. Swimming Plus has developed a participation league that encourages swimmers, coaches and clubs to participate in our open water events.

Participation league

Swimming and triathlon clubs earn league points, as per the Swimming Plus league table, at all Swimming Plus league races. The club with the most accumulated points at the end of the season will be rewarded. The top swimmers (the swimmers that have contributed the most points to their club) in the Participation League will also be recognized for their efforts.

Extreme open water swimming

The canals of Marina Martinique are ideal for all year round open water swimming. They are not tidal and are swimmable in the worst weather conditions of the area. Over the winter months, the water temperatures drops to below 13° C and open water swimming becomes a lot more challenging.

Cold Water Classic

Swimming Plus, in conjunction with the Jeffreys Bay Winterfest, runs the Jeffreys Bay Cold Water Classic where we take advantage of these extreme swimming conditions. Swimmers can challenge themselves in a safe, supervised and controlled environment and even qualify and prepare for Robben Island and English Channel crossings.

Trail running and adventure races

The flexibility of our system, infrastructure and business model has made it easy to organise and run other types of events over the colder winter months. We are in the process of developing and testing trail runs and adventure swims that we are hoping to add to our 2014 calendar.
